In the Hong Kong horse racing system, what do PPG, ISG, and PP mean?

These abbreviations refer to different types of horses based on their purchase and racing history:

  • PPG (Privately Purchased Griffin): A young, unraced horse (typically 2 or 3 years old) privately purchased overseas and imported to Hong Kong to begin training. These horses have never raced before, and usually start their careers in griffin races or barrier trials.

Griffin: A young horse that has not previously raced in Hong Kong.
Privately Purchased: Acquired outside official Hong Kong Jockey Club sales channels.

PPGs are assessed for ability and adaptability before entering open competition.

In comparison:

  • ISG (International Sale Griffin): A griffin purchased through the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s official sale.
  • PP (Privately Purchased): A horse that has raced overseas and is privately imported into Hong Kong.
