Andrew Campbell will follow a familiar and lucrative black type path with lightly tried youngster Singletary.
The Otaki trainer will open the son of Satono Aladdin’s new preparation in Saturday’s Listed Phils Electrical & Gipsy Caravans Ryder Stakes (1200m) on his home track and all going well, will then progress toward next month’s Listed Wanganui Guineas (1200m).
Campell will be hoping can history repeat with his current charge after previously enjoying success in both events back in 2017 with Waldorf prior to his sale to Hong Kong where he won a further six races for Tony Cruz.
“Providing he goes as well as hope, we’ll do what we did with Waldorf and go to the Wanganui Guineas,” he said.
“We could possibly look to go down south later for the big one (Gr.1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas, 1600m), but he obviously has to front up first.
“It’s a good starting point on Saturday for his three-year-old career, it looks a good, even field.”
Singletary has made an encouraging with a debut second at Ellerslie and then finished sixth in a return trip in the Gr.3 Colin Jillings 2YO Classic (1200m).
“He ran well in two decent races earlier in the year, but it was probably a bit too firm for him at his last start, his first run was very good and he likes the cut out of the ground,” Campbell said.
Singletary also underwent surgery since his last appearance at the end of January.
“He had a really good break and we gelded him, he wasn’t really colty but he had his moments and he’s come back a lot stronger this time in,” Campbell said.
“He trialled very well the other day (at Foxton), Toni Davies was on him and she’ll ride him again on Saturday.”
Davies will also be aboard stablemates Cocobill in the Uzabus Handicap (1100m) and Perfect Pete in the DG Farriers Handicap (1200m).
The former was a three-time winner in Victoria for Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young before joining Campbell’s stable and added to his tally last preparation when successful at Woodville.
“We’ll throw him in the deep end on Saturday, there’s not many Rating 75s around over 1200m and it will be like that trip, it’s going to be pretty heavy,” he said.
“He’s had a good spell and he’s trialled up very well.”
Perfect Pete has only won once from 15 appearances but is rarely far off the action and is a genuine wet track performer.
“He’s had a freshen-up and 1200m will suit him, he worked well on Tuesday,” Campbell said.
“He’s obviously no superstar, but he could be a handy horse over the rest of the winter. It’s his time of the year.”
